MAGAZINE HEAVEN:

Today one of my jobs was to clear out the VAST magazine archive. Anything older than three month was to be chucked...result = hundreds of lovely magazines for me to keep! There's all the usual suspects; Vogue, Elle etc. as well as plenty of obscure, international and arty magazines which excited me somewhat, and great research for my third year project. Will get scanning this weekend and upload my faves...

SUPERMARKET SARAH:

Recently came across the revolutionary concept of Supermarket Sarah; the creation of Sarah Banger, who started out on the Portabello Road and has since moved the market stall into her own home for an appointment only experience, complete with tea and cakes. Supermarket Sarah offers a unique collection of treasures, including vintage clothing, shoes, accessories, furniture and general one-off trinkets. Sarah documents the shifting of her stock with live shots on her website. These photographs, in themselves, are like pieces of still life art as she devises specific stories so that there is a flow of themes to her collection. This is basically what I want my house to look like...to see her stuff in all it's splendour go to www.supermarket.com!

H BY HARRIS:

Absolutely love H by Harris, a new luxury luggage brand by stylist Harris Elliott, one of Cube's clients. H by HARRIS’s debut collection comprises of two collections, the Q hand quilted Nappa leather and the SH wax hide leather collection which takes inspiration from a vintage military shoulder bag. Styles include Rucksacks, totes, weekend bags, satchels and laptop skins and my favourite, the H jacket. Having seen the collection up close it really is beautiful, the leather is so soft and tactile. I love his look book, set out like a a periodic table - very simple yet stylish, visually-appealing yet functional - perfectly fitting for the collection itself. This would be a great feature for my accessories magazine, as an up-and-coming luxury brand primarily targeting the male market.

WATERMELON MAGIC:

The other day as I wandered past the Aldwych Theatre, home to the Dirty Dancing musical, on my daily travels from Waterloo to Holborn, I encountered an unusual sight. Over a hundred people queueing outside the theatre doors holding watermelons! I had in fact heard the promotion myself on the radio the previous day, 'show up to the Aldwych before 10am with a watermelon and get a pair of free tickets to see Dirty Dancing'. Stupidly I failed to make the connection that I walked past the very spot every morning, and alas...there were no watermelon-purchasing opportunities in sight. What really impressed me was the 'watermelon man' outside the theatre, carving magnificent scultpures and pieces of art...you guessed it...from watermelons!

I think the promotion for the 'Walking in my Mind' exhibition at the Hayward Gallery is top notch. The strong red and white toad stool visuals are fitting and effective, and with the memorable pattern adorning every tree along the South Bank, the campaign is very impactful. I am planning to give the exhibition a visit in the next few weeks...

TAPE ART:

At Cube, the showroom is behind a shop which changes every few months: when I came for my interview it was vintage clothing store, Rag and Bone, then an independant art exhibition. Currently, it is a pop-up shop for Universal Works, one of the brands in Cube's portfolio. It exhibits the work of artist Kay Van-Bellen, who also created this simple yet very eye-catching window display. It's a bit tricky to see from the photos but it is created entirely from masking tape, perfectly pared-down for this gloomy econonic climate.
